OUR SOCTOBER DONATION

What's Happening in Year 3!

CATHOLIC MISSION- SOCTOBER
SOCK IT TO POVERITY
Year Three have been working very hard at home completing chores to raise money for our mission unit.
As a class we decided to raise enough money to purchase two goats at $82.00 through Catholic Mission.
Today, Year Three held a class fundraiser making sock puppets and decorating their own cupcakes.
We are excited to announce we have raised enough money for FOUR goats! WE ARE SO EXCITED TO BE GIVING FOUR GOATS AS CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO FAMILIES IN CAMBODIA AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA! We know goats are the perfect gift as they nourish families with dairy products to keep the entire family healthy. Their products can also be sold to generate income for the family to become self-reliant.

BOOK WEEK @ ST. MATTS

Year 3 'Mercy Matters'
Year 3 have been learning about the Year of Mercy in the Catholic church. Year 3 have learnt how important it is to be a mercy-giver. To be a mercy-giver it includes helping around the house, showing qualities of kindness, empathy and love towards others. Our 'Growing in the Garden of Mercy' is in progress. Each child was given 8 petals to build a flower. On each petal is something nice they have done to show Mercy.
Students are also showing mercy in the classroom and when someone has been a mercy-giver a new leaf grows on our tree.

We look forward to seeing our garden of mercy grow!

Miss Grima tried and only jumped 1.70 metres (good try Miss Grima).

SCIENCE: DAY & NIGHT
Our professional Scientists have been working hard on their new PBL. Today, students participated in two experiments. They used different sized balls to represent the Sun, Earth and the Moon and focused on the following questions;
  a) Why does the Sun and Moon look the same size from Earth? and
 b) Does the Sun, Moon & Earth rotate and/or revolve around each other?

OUR FIRST VISIT TO THE HAWKESBURY LIBRAY
It was Year 3's first time attending the Hawkesbury library. We borrowed books based on our Science PBL - Day & Night as students begin to use a variety of sources to gain information. We will be going back next Wednesday.

CELEBRATIONS PBL
Year 3 made Chinese lanterns in relation to our Celebrations Unit in learning about Chinese New Year. We designed the background by painting pink cherry blossom trees which naturally grow in the middle northern or southern part of China.

MATHEMATICIANS IN YEAR 3!
Wow- what a week it has been in Year 3. We have learnt so much in one week.
In Mathematics, Year 3 have been breaking apart arrays to find the answer. Students are looking at proving their answer by using paddle-pop sticks to divide the counters into halves and quarters, making smaller arrays.

Year 3 have also been learning a few more strategies when number busting. Students looked at different strategies when finding a number on a number line, not just estimating. Students also looked at writing equations using more than one operation. Great job Year 3, Mrs Burke & Miss Grima LOVE hard thinking!!!

Thank you to our lovely Parents who came in and shared their cultural background with us today. It was fantastic to see everyone sharing their cultural foods and items. We learnt so much about each others backgrounds and nationalities. Today allowed us all to be more open-minded and gave us a sense of unity and belonging within Year 3. We even had the CEO come out and interview a few students - how exciting! The link is below:
